Spiritual Gifts are one of the most contested, misunderstood, and either under-utilized or over-utilized parts of scripture in the western church.
Other parts of the world don't really debate this as much as us. Most churches in those parts of the world have no problem seeing how God can work through them directly AND speak to them through scripture… It’s not an either / or.
In the US we tend to lean one of 2 ways:
- We IGNORE the Spiritual Gifts and say
that God doesn’t work like that anymore,
and we miss so much of what He wants to do in us.
- We OVERDO it and get obsessed with the hand of God,
instead of the face and the heart of God.
No matter WHERE you land right now: Have an open mind, and believe GOD and SCRIPTURE, not DENOMINATION and MAN.
Spiritual Gifts in the Bible
So, when talking about Spiritual Gifts, there are 3 “sections” where they are listed.
Equipping Gifts
Ephesians 4:11-12
11 So Christ himself gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the pastors and teachers, 12 to equip his people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up
Motivational Gifts
Romans 12:6-8
6 We have different gifts, according to the grace given to each of us. If your gift is prophesying, then prophesy in accordance with your faith; 7 if it is serving, then serve; if it is teaching, then teach; 8 if it is to encourage, then give encouragement; if it is giving, then give generously; if it is to lead, do it diligently; if it is to show mercy, do it cheerfully.
Manifest Gifts
1 Corinthians 12:7-11
7 Now to each one the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the common good. 8 To one there is given through the Spirit a message of wisdom, to another a message of knowledge by means of the same Spirit, 9 to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing by that one Spirit, 10 to another miraculous powers, to another prophecy, to another distinguishing between spirits, to another speaking in different kinds of tongues, and to still another the interpretation of tongues. 11 All these are the work of one and the same Spirit, and he distributes them to each one, just as he determines.
