Esther is a story centers around the Old Testament account of a Jewish woman who was thrust into a weird situation politically and had the opportunity to stand up against injustice for the Jewish people of her time.
But Esther really was the sidekick in this story...a sidekick to her cousin Mordecai.
Esther 1:2
At that time King Xerxes reigned from his royal throne in the citadel of Susa, 3 and in the third year of his reign he gave a banquet for all his nobles and officials.”
Esther 2:13-14
13 And this is how she would go to the king: Anything she wanted was given her to take with her from the harem to the king’s palace. 14 In the evening she would go there and in the morning return to another part of the harem
This is Esther. An unmarried Jewish woman as a part of the king’s harem.
Esther 4:13
“Do not think that because you are in the king’s house you alone of all the Jews will escape, For if you remain silent at ahis time, relief and deliverance for the Jews will still arise from another place, but you and your father’s family will perish. And who knows but that you have come to your royal position for such a time as this?”
Esther is the sidekick, Mordecai is the main character!
Esther 9:3
“And all the nobles of the provinces, the satraps, the governors and the king’s administrators helped THE JEWS, because fear of Mordecai had seized them”
Good Sidekick/Bad Sidekick
At the end of the day Esther did the right thing and stepped up…BUT she’s one who struggled a LOT along the way to do the right thing.
And many times chose to do the wrong thing.
I find it encouraging that being a sidekick doesn’t mean you have to be perfect.
Lessons from Esther's Sidekick Role
1. Position doesn't matter.
A good sidekick isn’t concerned with their position. They’re concerned with the mission.
2. Don't be defined by your sin.
Just because you've messed up in something doesn't mean you're unable to be used still.
This is literally the reason WHY Jesus died on the cross!
1 John 1:9
If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.
3. Listen to wise counsel.
Know the difference between counsel and WISE counsel.
