As kids get older, you’re teaching them a lot of the same things you did when they were younger, you’re just going more in depth with them.
- Help them understand priorities
- Help them be faithful with daily time with Jesus
- Help them be an integral part of the church
- Teach them to operate as a part of a family team
- Teach them to obey GOD, and obey you too
- Discipline them when needed,
in a way that makes them see their wrongs,
but not just resent you
- Teach them to step into healthy gender roles
Instill Biblical Manhood and Womanhood
As a parent, you are the one who tells your kid when they’re a man, or a woman.
Ephesians 4:1
As a prisoner for the Lord, then, I urge you to live a life worthy of the calling you have received.
Ephesians 4:14
14 Then we will no longer be infants, tossed back and forth by the waves, and blown here and there by every wind of teaching and by the cunning and craftiness of people in their deceitful scheming.
Mothers, teach your boys how to treat women, how to cherish them, and how to respect their boundaries.
Fathers, teach your girls how a man should act, and set the bar for the kind of man that’s worthy of her.
Teach Your Kids What Biblical Sexuality Is
If you overly shelter them, and try to keep them from finding out what sex is, they will get a skewed definition of what it is.
Just like we said in the last sermon, only allow kids to date if they are mature enough to work towards marriage. If you redefine relationships with them to appease culture,
you’ll do the same thing with intimacy, sex, gender, and everything else. Don’t raise your kids to just survive the world, raise them to change it!
Dad’s, date your daughters and show them how they should be treated.
Mom’s, date your sons and show them how to treat a woman.
Guard Their Hearts From Harmful Content
Be the gatekeeper of content that comes into your home through media and social media. They are children, and it’s your responsibility to help them make good choices while you still can.
“there’s no way for us to change the world if we ARE the world”
“purity requires you to live differently, but you will never regret it”
Teach Them Value
At this age, you teach your kids what to value.
1 Samuel 16:7
For the Lord sees not as man sees: man looks on the outward appearance, but the Lord looks on the heart.
“If identity had not been spoken in this time of vulnerable weakness, perhaps she would have wasted years trying to prove to everyone she’s worth something.”
As kids grow up, they need more and more affirmation, but ask for it less and less.
Spend Intentional Time With Them
When you’re with them, be with them. It takes perseverance, continual investment,
and really knowing your kids well.
Also, show up for the things they care about. As kids get older they start to get their own hobbies and loves that are different from the ones you taught them. You (and the rest of your family including kids) join them and show them that you love and care about those things too because you love and care about them.
Model Following Jesus Through the Hard Times
Show them what it’s like to seek God for your hard decisions, and lead them through it with theirs.
Proverbs 22:6
Train up a child in the way he should go,
And when he is old he will not depart from it.
Eventually, they’re not young anymore and we need to teach them adults concepts, and let them try them out.
