NOT SO FAMOUS AMOS
A VOICE FOR THE VOICELESS
Amos 1-5
Amos, the person: Who is he?
He is a writing prophet of God.
2 Peter 1:20-21
20 Above all, you know this: No prophecy of Scripture comes from the prophet’s own interpretation, 21 because no prophecy ever came by the will of man; instead, men spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit.
Amos 1:1
The words of Amos, who was one of the sheep breeders from Tekoa—what he saw regarding Israel in the days of King Uzziah of Judah and Jeroboam son of Jehoash, king of Israel, two years before the earthquake.
Amos 7:14-15
14 So Amos answered Amaziah, “I was not a prophet or the son of a prophet; rather, I was a herdsman, and I took care of sycamore figs. 15 But the Lord took me from following the flock and said to me, ‘Go, prophesy to my people Israel.’”
Amos 2:11
I raised up some of your sons as prophets
and some of your young men as Nazirites.
Is this not the case, Israelites?
This is the Lord’s declaration.
Amos 3:7
Indeed, the Lord God does nothing
without revealing his counsel
to his servants the prophets.
So, this is really all we know about Amos - God took him away from his secular job and told him to prophesy to Israel.
Amos, the book: What is God Saying?
Judgment is coming!
Amos 1:2
"He [Amos] said: The Lord roars from Zion and makes his voice heard from Jerusalem; the pastures of the shepherds mourn, and the summit of Carmel withers."
Amos the Book: Why is God Judging the Nations?
God is judging the nations because of sin!
- God is sovereign over all the nations of the earth.
- God is impartial in His judgements of sin.
- God is patient but does not overlook sin.
Amos the Book: How Should We Respond?
Amos 5:4
Seek me and live!
Amos 5:6

Amos 5:14
Pursue good and not evil so that you may live
