We get hit with difficult situations regularly in life, and sometimes deciding how to biblically handle them is not always a simple black and white answer. In this series, we’re diving into specific situations and looking to scripture to see how we should practically handle them.
Today, we will be looking at how to handle it when someone asks you for money because, let’s face it, when it happens, it can not only be a difficult situation but an awkward one as well. What are some of the typical responses when someone hits you up?
- Sorry, I don’t carry cash.
- You keep walking like don’t even hear them.
- No
- What for?
- Get a job
Or, what if you are on the other side of the spectrum and you keep a few Washingtons in your pocket just for an event like this? When you dish out money, what is the motive behind it?
- Guilt?
- Generosity?
- Benevolence?
- Christ-likeness?
- To get them to leave you alone?
The reality is that God has called us to help and serve those around us, but what does that actually look like in this situation?
12 He also said to the one who had invited him, “When you give a lunch or a dinner, don’t invite your friends, your brothers or sisters, your relatives, or your rich neighbors, because they might invite you back, and you would be repaid. 13 On the contrary, when you host a banquet, invite those who are poor, maimed, lame, or blind. 14 And you will be blessed, because they cannot repay you; for you will be repaid at the resurrection of the righteous.” Luke 14:12–14.
