Teacher: Yale Wall Series: Trending Words

Genesis 1:1
In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.

Psalm 139:13
For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb.

John 15:13
Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.

"Lord"

“Lord” is used 7101 times in the Old Testament and 672 times in the New Testament in the English NIV Translation.

Lord: My Master

Hebrew - adonay

Adonay is used from one person to another to denote devotion or leadership to the person you are talking to, and to let them know in a single word that they have authority over you and that you will follow their authority.

From a person to a King:
1 Samuel 26:15
Why didn’t you guard your lord the king?

From a child to their parent:
Genesis 31:35
Rachel said to her father, “Don’t be angry, my lord

From a wife to a husband:
Genesis 18:12
So Sarah laughed to herself as she thought, “After I am worn out and my lord is old, will I now have this pleasure?”

From a worker to their master:
Genesis 33:13
So let my lord go on ahead of his servant

There is a common thread in the 188 times this word is used… They are all voluntary.

Lord: The name of God

Hebrew - Yahweh
Greek - Kyrios

Calling God, Yahweh holds a weight to it that we just don’t understand. The “Fire and Brimstone view of God” where He comes in and tells it like it is and if you don’t get on board then you are going to Hell is a VERY REAL part of God.  It isn’t because He isn’t merciful or isn’t loving. Without God being Lord, his mercy holds no weight.

2 Corinthians 12:9
But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me.

But, God isn’t just described as lord, He IS Lord.

Genesis: Yahweh is used 161 times
Exodus: Yahweh is used 390 times
Leviticus: Yahweh is used 310 times
Numbers: Yahweh is used 395 times
Deuteronomy: Yahweh is used 546 times

1802 times total, just in the first 5 books of the Bible.

Because LORD is his identity. He IS LORD and therefore, He is the one with the authority.

He has Lordship over Nature and People
Psalm 24:1-2
1 The earth is the Lord’s, and everything in it,
    the world, and all who live in it;
2 for he founded it on the seas
and established it on the waters.

He has Lordship over Military and National Progress
Psalm 24:8
Who is this King of glory?
    The Lord strong and mighty,
    the Lord mighty in battle.

There is an air of Dominance in his Lordship
1 Samuel 17:45
45 David said to the Philistine, “You come against me with sword and spear and javelin, but I come against you in the name of the Lord Almighty, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied.

There is an Authority in what is right and wrong
Genesis 2:16-17
16 And the Lord God commanded the man, “You are free to eat from any tree in the garden; 17 but you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, for when you eat from it you will certainly die.”

The Lord’s People

Greek - Hagios

In the Old Testament, whenever you talked about the “people of God” you talked about the Nation of Israel. His people were considered his people because of when and where they were created. The idea of that shifts between the Old Testament and the New Testament.

Matthew 1:1
This is the genealogy of Jesus the Messiah the son of David, the son of Abraham:

Between the Old Testament and the New Testament, Jesus changed everything!  The idea of you going to Hell and being separated from God was so unpalatable for Him that he came personally to rectify it.

John 10:10
10 The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.

His Lordship is something that naturally separates us, BUT, Jesus came to mend that separation.

Hagios is used 22 times in the New Testament to describe the people of God.  It doesn’t describe a people that THINK that they are Christians, because of how they grew up, or who their family is. It’s a group of people that are defined by Jesus as people that are saved and set free by the blood of Jesus.

Romans 12:13
Share with the Lord’s people who are in need. Practice hospitality.

Ephesians 3:8
8 Although I am less than the least of all the Lord’s people, this grace was given me: to preach to the Gentiles the boundless riches of Christ

1 Corinthians 14:33
For God is not a God of disorder but of peace—as in all the congregations of the Lord’s people.

There is significance in us being called the Lord’s People. It's not based on what we think about ourselves, it’s based on God, claiming us as His own.
