OLD AND NEW TESTAMENT SURVEY

The whole Bible was given to us by inspiration from God and is useful to teach us what is true and make us realize what is wrong in our lives; it straightens us out and helps us to do what is right.

 

OLD TESTAMENT

The Old Testament divides into four major sections which relate to the nation of Israel as God’s chosen people in the following manner from the standpoint of their major characteristics or focus:

The Law—relates to Israel’s moral life.
The Historical—relates to Israel’s national development and life.
The Poetical—relates to Israel’s spiritual life.
The Prophetical—relates to Israel’s future life as fulfilled in the Messiah.

The term "Pentateuch" comes from the Greek term meaning "five-volumed” (book) after the Jewish designation. The Jews called it "Torah." Although each book is a unit, together they form a larger unit and unity.

NEW TESTAMENT

The New Testament is a record of historical events of the saving life of the Lord Jesus Christ—His life, death, resurrection, ascension, and the continuation of His work in the world—which is explained and applied by the apostles whom He chose and sent into the world. It is also the fulfillment of those events long anticipated by the Old Testament.

Greek Period 331 - 142 B.C.
Ptolemaic Rule, Egypt 320 - 198 B.C.
Seleucid Rule, Syria 198 - 167 B.C.
Maccabean Period 167 - 142 B.C.

Hasmonean Period 140 - 63 B.C.

Israel became a Roman Province A.D. 135

Augustus Caesar and confirmed Herod the Great as King of the Jews. He was the Emperor at Christ's birth ordering the census. He influenced early Christianity by bringing to the region peace, economic prosperity, improved communications, stable government and a common language.

Tiberius was Emperor during the ministry and Crucifixion of Jesus. Pilate was appointed governor in Judea by Tiberius’ prefect of the Praetorian Guard, who hated the Jews. He died a natural death.

Gaius Caligula caused a diversion in favor of the Christians by his persecution of the Jews.

Claudius expulsed the Jews from Rome, who were continually making disturbances at the instigation of one “Chrestus.” This banned all Jews from Rome, Priscilla and Aquila left and went to Corinth. He died by being poisoned.

Nero accused the Christians of the crime burning Rome and began persecuting for this crime, which they had nothing to do with. This is the first persecution ordered by Rome's government, took place only in Rome.
