JOHN 5:1-15

John 5:1–16 (CSB)

1After this, a Jewish festival took place, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem. 2By the Sheep Gate in Jerusalem there is a pool, called Bethesda in Aramaic, which has five colonnades. 3Within these lay a large number of the disabled—blind, lame, and paralyzed. 5One man was there who had been disabled for thirty-eight years. 6When Jesus saw him lying there and realized he had already been there a long time, he said to him, “Do you want to get well?” 7“Sir,” the disabled man answered, “I have no one to put me into the pool when the water is stirred up, but while I’m coming, someone goes down ahead of me.” 8“Get up,” Jesus told him, “pick up your mat and walk.” 9Instantly the man got well, picked up his mat, and started to walk. Now that day was the Sabbath, 10and so the Jews said to the man who had been healed, “This is the Sabbath. The law prohibits you from picking up your mat.” 11He replied, “The man who made me well told me, ‘Pick up your mat and walk.’ 12“Who is this man who told you, ‘Pick up your mat and walk’?” they asked. 13But the man who was healed did not know who it was, because Jesus had slipped away into the crowd that was there. 14After this, Jesus found him in the temple and said to him, “See, you are well. Do not sin anymore, so that something worse doesn’t happen to you.” 15The man went and reported to the Jews that it was Jesus who had made him well.

Marathon and Mission (vv. 14-15)

What do you think? If someone has a hundred sheep, and one of them goes astray, won’t he leave the ninety-nine on the hillside and go and search for the stray? Matthew 18:12

Jesus came near and said to them, “All authority has been given to me in heaven and on earth. Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe everything I have commanded you. And remember, I am with you always, to the end of the age.” Matthew 28:18-20

14How, then, can they call on him they have not believed in? And how can they believe without hearing about him? And how can they hear without a preacher? 15And how can they preach unless they are sent? As it is written: How beautiful are the feet of those who bring good news. 16But not all obeyed the gospel. For Isaiah says, Lord, who has believed our message? Romans 10:14–16 (CSB)

7I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. 2 Timothy 4:7 (CSB)

  1. I have been in a hopeless place, but today I will choose Jesus and pick up my mat.
  2. I will choose not to go back to my mat just because it is a comfortable place.
