Come and Get Rest
Overcommitted -
Some of us are just overcommitting ourselves, and we need to learn how to say “NO.”
Undercommitted -
Some of us are tired because we’re not doing anything in the church at all.
I don’t think that most of us that are tired are really overcommitted or undercommitted. I think most of us in the church that are dead tired, are exactly where God wants us, and we’re doing the exact amount that He is calling us to do…
1. Feeding of the Five Thousand
Mark 6:30-37
30 The apostles gathered around Jesus and reported to him all they had done and taught. 31 Then, because so many people were coming and going that they did not even have a chance to eat, he said to them, “Come with me by yourselves to a quiet place and get some rest.”
32 So they went away by themselves in a boat to a solitary place. 33 But many who saw them leaving recognized them and ran on foot from all the towns and got there ahead of them. 34 When Jesus landed and saw a large crowd, he had compassion on them, because they were like sheep without a shepherd. So he began teaching them many things.
35 By this time it was late in the day, so his disciples came to him. “This is a remote place,” they said, “and it’s already very late. 36 Send the people away so that they can go to the surrounding countryside and villages and buy themselves something to eat.”
37 But he answered, “You give them something to eat.”
- Jesus told the disciples to get the people something to eat
- Jesus took them away to rest
2. Learning to trust God in our rest is a hard thing to do.
It takes a lot of trust in the sovereignty of God and the direction of God in our lives to stand back and let him be in control.
Matthew 11:28-29
28 “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. 29 Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.
3. Focusing on Jesus’ Leadership
When we focus solely on the things we’re doing, we’re going to fail, but when we’re taking time to look up and see what he wants to do, we are able to see that big move of God.
We can either stress out, and take the weight of all of this on our shoulders, or we can retreat and rest with Jesus and trust that He loves this church more than we ever could and let Him lead.
